How can we face the enormity of the many changes and challenges facing today’s world?
This five-week online course starts participants towards answering this question. The first week offers practices to help participants regulate their nervous systems and stay calm as we deepen our inquiry. Subsequent weeks explore the meaning of apocalypse, patterns of system change, their own stories of death and rebirth, and invite participants to interrogate their fears about the direction the world is heading. Online discussion forums and weekly Zoom conference calls allow participants to engage with one another and with the instructor. All of this leads to the ultimate goal of learning to embrace apocalypse.

Embracing Apocalypse is designed to help participants:
- Cultivate their capacity to stay calm and present,
- Recognize and understand patterns of system change,
- Discern their personal stories of death and rebirth,
- Craft stories of resilience to guide them through challenging times.
Course Content and Schedule
When you sign up for this course you will get access to a welcome page where you can familiarize yourself with LearnDash (the learning management system I use to run the course), fill out a Doodle Poll to schedule our Zoom calls, and access a discussion board where you can post questions. The course schedule follows:
Week 1: Regulating Our Nervous System (begins April 24): This first week introduces a conceptual model of how our nervous systems work, including our window of tolerance and the consequences of being pushed out of this window due to perceived threats of danger. Practices that can help participants regulate their nervous systems will be introduced.
Week 2: The Deeper Meaning of Apocalypse (begins May 1): This week invites us to look more deeply at apocalypse, including both its modern and original meanings. We will also explore patterns we see as systems change over time.
Week 3: Stories of Death and Rebirth (begins May 8): This week invites participants to explore where last week’s patterns of system change show up in their everyday lives. We will particularly explore personal stories of death and rebirth and how those connect to our innate resilience.
Week 4: Interrogating Our Fears (begins May 15): This week participants explore and interrogate their fears about how the apocalypse might unfold. This week invites us to shift from stories rooted in fear to stories rooted in curiosity.
Week 5: Embracing Apocalypse (begins May 22): This week revisits the title of this course, Embracing Apocaypse, and invites participants to explore what it means for them, in their circumstances, to carry out this goal.
Embracing Apocalypse is a semi-synchronous online course that begins on Friday, April 24, 2020. New content is released every Friday for five consecutive Fridays, as per the schedule above. Participants can engage with the content as it is released and follow along with their cohort, or they can engage at a slower pace of their choosing. The course materials will be available for all enrolled participants for at least 6 months following the course’s end date of Friday, May 15. New material is released on Friday so that participants have the weekend to engage with it.
Course content will take the form of one lesson each week which will be presented in video, audio, and written form. The audio lesson will be taken directly from the video, and the written material will duplicate the audio and video media. Participants can use any or all of these media to engage with the material, and those who choose to only engage with one media format will never miss anything those who engage with other formats get.
Inquiry is a key component of this course. Each week’s lesson will include multiple questions participants are invited to reflect on for that week. These questions will be presented in private discussion forums where participants can share their thoughts with other participants. Eric will participate in these forums and will use them to engage with other participants. New discussion questions will be introduced each Friday when the next week’s lesson is made available.
Zoom calls will be hosted by Eric towards the end of each week. A Doodle Poll will be used to schedule these calls, and every effort will be made to make them as accessible to as many participants as possible. Live participation in these calls is not required. They will be recorded and made available for the benefit of those who cannot participate. If it is very important to you that you be able to participate in these calls, please email Eric after you register to let him know this and he will make every effort to accommodate you.
